How Common Is Adult Incontinence?

Incontinence is not a commonly discussed topic, and that can often lead incontinence sufferers to feel isolated and alone. But the fact is, bladder leakage is an incredibly common problem, especially among older adults.

According to the National Association for Continence, more than 25 million people in the USA experience bladder leakage every day. And while incontinence is more common in women, due to pregnancy, childbirth and menopause, a significant number of men experience the problem as well.

As women get older, incontinence becomes more common, but statistics show that one in four women over the age of 18 experience bladder leakage at least occasionally. Unfortunately, on average, they tend wait for more than six years before seeking medical advice about the problem. The truth is that nobody needs to suffer in silence, as there are many ways to control or at least improve bladder control through lifestyle changes, exercise and certain medications.

The most common type of incontinence experienced by men is known as ‘urge incontinence,’ which means they experience a strong, sudden urge to urinate, often accompanied by loss of urine. Also common is ‘stress incontinence,’ which involves leakage when laughing, coughing, sneezing or exercising. Among men, the most common causes include an enlarged prostate, or prostate surgery.

If you are experiencing incontinence, it is important to know that you are not alone. Most cases of urinary incontinence can be treated, or at least managed, with professional help. So if you are one of the many who struggle with this common problem, consult your physician and find out what you can do to take back control, and get back to living your life to the fullest.
